What are Ozone-Depleting Substances?

The Chemicals Industry

The development of new or better materials to fulfill societal needs has traditionally been led by leaders in the chemicals industries. This is modeled as the delivery of goods with the appropriate physical or chemical properties that do not leave lasting damage on society. Presently, the emphasis is on providing goods and materials that have less of an impact on the environment, including (but not limited to) smaller carbon footprints. Chemicals will be crucial in bringing the economy to net-zero emissions as businesses rapidly move away from fossil fuels and toward renewable materials.

In order to address pressing social issues including global food shortages, climate change, and plastic waste management, the chemicals sector is essential. High expectations are put on the chemical industry: in addition to reducing their own environmental impact, they must also advocate for creative approaches and sustainable solutions across all of their client industries. After all, the new materials and processes developed by the chemicals industry have made it possible to introduce new mobility concepts, create inexpensive homes, and ensure that there is enough food for everyone on the planet.

To innovate these environmentally-friendly chemicals, however, requires a shift away from a reactionary, compliance-driven strategy and toward the creation and capture of value in a sustainable manner- a methodology implemented into the very core of Yuji America!

What does ODS mean?

Ozone depleting substances, or ODS for short, are hazardous chemicals that, if they are allowed to escape, harm the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere. Due to their capacity to raise temperatures and warm their surroundings, in this case the atmosphere, many ozone depleting compounds contribute to climate change.

In the effort to counteract climate change, global warming, and additional ozone layer thinning, ozone depleting substances are increasingly replaced by fluorinated chemicals, since most ODS are now outlawed for everyday use.

Types of ODS

chlorofluorocarbons (“CFCs”)

halons

carbon tetrachloride

1,1,1-Trichloroethane (methyl chloroform)

Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs)

Why are ODS substitutes important?

ODS substitutes are important because they do not deplete the earth’s protective ozone layer. A portion of the sun’s radiation is absorbed by the ozone layer in the stratosphere, keeping it from reaching the planet’s surface. Most significantly, it absorbs UVB radiation, which is a type of UV light. UVB, a type of ultraviolet light produced by the sun and sunlamps, has a number of negative lasting effects on humans and the environment.

An important multinational environmental accord called the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer controls the manufacturing and use of about 100 synthetic compounds known as ozone-depleting substances (ODS). The stratospheric ozone layer is destroyed when these substances are discharged into the atmosphere. The ozone layer shields the planet’s inhabitants and ecosystem from the sun’s dangerous ultraviolet rays. The Protocol, adopted on September 16, 1987, is the only UN convention that has been accepted by all 198 UN member states, or every nation in the world.

Yuji’s Fluorine Chemical Substitutes for Ozone Depleting Substances

Yuji is dedicated to delivering fluorine chemical alternatives for ozone-depleting substances. These chemicals serve as important substitutes for high ODP and/or high GWP chemicals that impact our environment negatively. Yuji supports a multitude of initiatives that puts sustainability at the center of our developments, pushing forward eco -friendly solutions that positively contribute to the overall efforts towards a carbon-neutral society thus supported by the chemicals industry.

Next generation fluorine-containing chemicals is the direction that the chemicals industry is turning towards, so join us in the effort in creating a cleaner society. Yuji provides many ODS alternatives and fluorinated fine materials, which are widely used in the fields of refrigeration, foaming, aerosol propellants, fire extinguishing, industrial cleaning, semiconductor, electric power, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and much more!
